  • Switched to a softer, more comfortable fabric
  • Switched to garment dyeing (i.e. done after the shorts are made), which gives the fabric a less smooth finish and a colour that ages better over time
  • Adjusted the pocket dimensions to stop things from slipping out when you sit down

We wrote a whole article about how we improved the colour retention of these shorts (link here).

Organic cotton

These shorts are made mostly of organic cotton, meaning cotton grown using organic farming methods (we explain why we chose this here), with a touch of elastane for comfort.

Composition: 98% organic cotton 2% elastane.

On cotton shorts, it's almost impossible to get colours that don't fade under the effects of sun, chlorine or sweat. So we opted for garment dyed dyeing: these shorts will develop a lovely patina over time.

Measurement chart

Careful: you don't necessarily wear the same size on top as on the bottom — just because you wear your t-shirts in M doesn't mean you'll wear your trousers in M. To help you out, it's best to go by the shorts size you usually wear (if you're torn between two sizes, size up):

Below is our measurement chart. If you'd like to compare it to a pair of shorts you already own, pick one that fits you well (we're talking about the size, not the colour) and measure it flat.

The techniques behind the quality

Twill weave
Twill weave

Generally used on jeans, the twill weave produces fabrics that are strong, wrinkle-resistant... and where barbecue stains show up less.

These shorts are stabilised and pre-washed at the factory so they won't shrink at home (with cotton garments, most of the shrinkage happens during the first wash).

For many summers to come

Bermuda shorts with a timeless straight cut (ending just above the knee) in a beautiful organic cotton twill, thick enough to last and to resist wrinkling. What makes them special: these shorts are dyed after being made. This “garment-dyed” technique lets the colour fade beautifully with sun exposure, washes, and afternoons at the beach.

In detail

Portuguese twill

You can spot a "twill" by the subtle diagonal lines in the fabric. Ours comes from the Portuguese factory TMG.

Zipped back pocket

A button might come loose, and without it, the pocket would eventually gape open.

Semi-automatic YKK fly

A zip developed by the leading Japanese brand, which stops your fly from opening on its own: when the pull tab is folded down, the slider is completely locked. As soon as you lift the tab, the zip unlocks and the fly can be opened or closed.

Metal button

Since classic buttons always end up coming loose, we went with a metal one, like on a pair of jeans. Because steel is (a little) tougher than cotton thread.

How this product will age
How do we know? We ask our customers what they think of the product one year after they've bought it. And if the product is less than a year old, we give you our predictions based on some spontaneous feedback and on our experience with similar products.

The fabric of these shorts is fairly hard-wearing: it will wear over time, but it's dense enough to last a good few years. Like a pair of jeans, it will stretch a little as you wear it, then "tighten up" again after a trip through the machine.
But let's be honest: the colour of these shorts will change. Washing, and above all UV rays, salt, chlorine and sweat, are tough on dyes applied to cotton. There's no way to make a colour that never changes without resorting to polyester or toxic chemicals. So we went for a fairly light colour range and a "garment-dyed" finish that gives the shorts a vintage look and will develop a lovely patina with sun exposure, plenty of washes and afternoons at the beach…
To go further: we've written a whole article on how we improved the colour retention of these shorts (link here).

Care instructions

Just like a pair of jeans, the fabric of these shorts will stretch a little as you wear them, and tighten back up after a wash.

They're machine washable at 40 degrees, but 30°C is a better choice: it's just as effective, far greener and it'll extend their lifespan. Wash them inside out to avoid the rubbing that could slightly fade your shorts in places, and do up the zip and button before putting them in the machine: this stops the teeth from getting damaged.

But let's be honest: the colour of these shorts will shift over time. Washing, and especially UV rays, salt, chlorine and sweat, are tough on dyes applied to cotton. There's no way to make a colour that never fades without turning to polyester or toxic chemicals. So we went for a fairly light colour palette and a so-called "garment-dyed" finish, which gives them a vintage look and will develop a lovely patina with sun exposure, plenty of washes and lazy afternoons at the beach…

Environmental cost
This environmental cost is calculated using the official methodology of the French environmental labelling scheme (in force since 1 October 2025).

The label above shows the product's environmental cost according to the official methodology of the French environmental labelling scheme. It's what its manufacture "costs" nature when you look at its impact on climate change, ocean acidification, its toxicity for freshwater, and so on. Currently rolled out in the textile sector, this label should soon appear on many everyday consumer products (food, cosmetics, furniture, etc.) to help you shop more responsibly.

The classic shorts therefore have an environmental cost of 1453 impact points*.

By comparison, a garment of equivalent weight, made of 100% conventional cotton, manufactured in Bangladesh and sold by a fast fashion brand, has an environmental cost of 4018 points*.

Why the difference? Here are the main reasons:

  • Where things are made: manufacturing in Portugal or France requires less fossil fuel than in Bangladesh (one of the main producers of low-cost clothing). The result: this more local production limits the impact on climate change, ocean acidification and resource depletion.
  • Durability: fast fashion brands drive purchases in particular by refreshing their collections very quickly and offering a huge number of styles, and they discourage repairs by charging absurdly low prices. This increases the number of garments sold per person and reduces the number of times a garment is worn. At Loom, we've done the opposite: we've chosen business practices that encourage our customers to keep their clothes as long as possible.

Even though we've done everything we can to keep it as low as possible, this product's environmental impact isn't negligible. So before you buy, make your clothes last as long as you can.

*Calculations performed by Loom on 28/09/2026. Click the links to access the simulations from the official Ecobalyse tool and get more details on the assumptions used. Please note: the number of points isn't always exactly the same on Ecobalyse (whose method changes regularly) as on the official environmental label (based on version 7.0 of Ecobalyse)

Reviews for this product

The standard practice is to send review request e-mails a few days after the purchase. We wait a month, the minimum time needed to form a well-informed opinion

Learn more about our reviews policy

Customer review policy

When do you ask customers for reviews?

We send you a review request one month after you receive your order. We reckon that's the minimum amount of time needed to have worn and washed a garment several times and to really form a well-informed opinion. After that, all your reviews are published within the week, whether they're good or not.

Do you ask for reviews on 100% of the products customers order?

We used to do that at first, then we realised we were starting to send far too many emails to some people who buy from us regularly. In short, we were spamming a bit. On top of that, it was starting to take up way too much of the team's time to reply to reviews - since we want to reply individually and privately to almost every person who leaves us a review. Today, we no longer ask for reviews on products that meet the following two criteria: 1/ There are enough reviews shown on the site for people who want to buy to form a well-informed opinion about the product 2/ We've read enough reviews within the Loom team to understand how to improve the product for the next generation.

Hold your horses: what proves we don't tamper with reviews by slapping 5 stars everywhere?

Honestly: nothing, we're just giving you our word. Same as for everything else, by the way: where we manufacture, where our wool comes from, our lab test scores, and so on. The only times we might touch what you write are if your message contains spelling mistakes (and even then, quite a few slip past us) or if it's racist, homophobic, and so on (but that's never happened so far).

Asking for a review after a month isn't enough to know whether the clothes really are durable, is it?

You're right, which is why we send you another review request email a year after your purchase – we even ask for a photo to see how your garment has aged. The answers help us improve our clothes and provide information about "how this product will age" on our product pages. To avoid bothering our customers needlessly, we don't ask for these reviews on 100% of the products ordered: as soon as we have enough data to understand the areas for improvement, we stop asking for the one-year reviews.
